Do Hair Oils Actually Grow Hair?
‘Hair oil’ and ‘hair growth oil’ are among the biggest beauty searches in the UAE. Here is the part the labels skip: almost no oil grows hair. Most condition. Exactly one even penetrates the strand. This is which does what.
The one thing oils cannot do
Oils do not grow hair the way a proven topical does. What a good oil does is reduce breakage — so hair holds length and looks fuller. That is protection, not regrowth. And only one common oil actually penetrates the hair cortex: coconut, thanks to its small lauric-acid molecule (Rele, J Cosmet Sci 2003 — Scopus 90×; Keis 2005, 29×). The rest sit on the surface.
Oil by oil
| Oil | What it actually does | Verdict | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coconut oil (lauric acid) | The one oil that penetrates the hair cortex; cuts protein loss and breakage. | Repair — not growth | Rele 90×; Keis 29× |
| Mineral / sunflower oil | Sit on the surface; do not penetrate the fibre. | Coat only | Rele, 2003 |
| Argan oil | Coats the cuticle and adds shine; does not penetrate the cortex. | Shine only | Rele & Mohile, 2003 |
| Castor oil | Popular folk remedy; no controlled evidence it grows hair. | No growth evidence | no controlled trial |
| Onion oil | The famous study used raw juice on alopecia areata — not a growth oil. | Different disease | Sharquie 83× |
| Rosemary oil | The one oil with a real trial — matched 2% minoxidil for pattern loss. | Works — pattern loss | Panahi 97× |
‘Hair growth oil’ — read the label
If a bottle promises growth, the active is usually not the oil — it is a peptide, or rosemary at a leave-on dose. Castor oil’s reputation is folklore, not data. And onion’s viral 87% is from a study on alopecia areata, a different disease.
How to use oil well
Use coconut oil as a pre-wash treatment, 30+ minutes before shampoo, to cut the swelling damage of washing. Use light oils sparingly as a finishing shine. Don’t expect any of them to regrow a receding hairline.
Where Tara fits
We use oils for what they genuinely do — protect and smooth — and reserve ‘growth’ for ingredients with real trials. See the one oil with a trial, or which hair ingredients actually work.
